Student life in Wuppertal

is supported by the Hochschul-Sozialwerk Wuppertal (canteen, housing, BAföG)

Wuppertal itself is not a classic beauty. It is a city with rough edges and has much more to offer than the suspended railroad 'Schwebebahn' and a long industrial history. Shopping opportunities, promenades and artists' quarters convey an authenticity that is not not expected at first glance. The charm of the city is reflected in the canyons of houses, in the old parts of the city and the view from the Schwebebahn, which runs over the Wupper River through the entire city, leaving impressive impressions of the industrial culture, nature and the modern lifestyle.

The entertainment options are numerous. In addition to several cinemas, theaters, an opera house and the zoo, Wuppertal has very lively and popular pubs and clubs scene. The old town center is in Wuppertal Elberfeld, the Luisenviertel, is the home to many nice pubs and restaurants captivated with its typical Bergisch old town style. The nightlife is rounded off by regular student parties, which are known beyond the faculty borders, such as the legendary Wiwi Caipi Party or the parties of the student councils at Grifflenberg or Haspel.

The city of Wuppertal is very centrally located, between the Ruhr area, Düsseldorf and Cologne. The good public transportation connections between these cities makes its reachability quick, easy and free of charge thanks to the student ticket.

Accommodation

Affordable rents is a the big plus point for your studying time in Wuppertal. Here you have chances both on the free housing market and for a place in a dormitory. Although it is not visible at first glance in the valley axis: Wuppertal is dominated by the Gründerzeit building stock. The numerous neighborhoods close to the city center offer a variety of living space for communal living or the single apartment with style.

Wuppertal's student residences are known throughout Germany. Some of them combine award-winning architecture with energy efficiency. But beware that the residence halls of the Hochschulsozialwerk are located on the main campus and not in the surrounding area of the Campus am Haspel.

Mobility

Wuppertal is the city of the suspension railroad 'Schwebebahn'. This has made everything in the valley reliable Riding the suspension railway is a must for tourists, and everyday life for students. Our Haspel campus is also located on the suspension railroad line (Landgericht stop).

Wuppertal is part of a metropolitan region with a network of major cities in the immediate vicinity. With the student NRW Ticket, mobility in the region is included.

Wuppertal is not (yet) a bicycle city. But the new car-free east-west bike connection via the Nordbahntrasse will change a lot. On weekends, there is a bicycle traffic jam here when the weather is good. In the surrounding Bergisches Land region, cycling is sporty.
